Paul Pierce led Boston with 32 points, Ray Allen added 22, Rajon Rondo has 21 points, and the Boston Celtics defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 111-109 on Wednesday night. The Bobcats were trailing 62-53 in the third quarter, but their defense would counterattack and bring the team back from the deficit. They went on a 27-3 run in a span of 9:41 to take a 74-65 lead on a dunk by Emeka Okafor with only 54 ticks left in the third quarter. It was one of his three dunks in that surge in which Gerald Wallace scored eight points. Get Boston Celtics playoff tickets and see Allen’s jump shots from downtown.
Charlotte continued to mount their attack in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats scored eight of the first 10 points to go ahead 85-73 on Raymond Felton’s driving basket with 8:48 remaining. But Boston battled back with a 10-4 burst and cut the lead to 89-83 on Rondo’s quick layup with 4:15 remaining in the game. This intense match-up got interesting in overtime. The players kept going end-to-end in a game that looked like it would never end. With only 12.4 seconds left of the first overtime, Allen made no mistake in burying his shot from downtown. His 3-pointer tied the game at 101.
The game continued to roll on into a second overtime. The game was tied early in the second OT before Wallace hit a layup and Allen mad a 3-pointer for a 106-105 Boston lead. But Charlotte bounced back when Felton put the Bobcats ahead with his clutch scoring drive. Pierce answered by converting on an offensive rebound to put the Celtics up by 108-107. Charlotte made their final push of the night when Okafor made a short bank shot with 46 seconds left to play. The score at that point was 109-108. Allen then had a chance to put the game away, but shot an airball on a 3-point shot. Felton missed the rebound and Boston’s Eddie House recovered with only 11.3 seconds left of the game.
House then connected with Allen who was surprised to find himself wide open behind the 3-point arc. There was only 2.1 seconds left of the second overtime when Allen made his game winning jump shot from downtown. It wasn’t an airball, like his 3-point shot less than a minute earlier, and not like his unguarded 3-pointer that ended the scoring in the first overtime. This shot was nothing but net. The scrappy defense that got the Bobcats back in the game in the third quarter was missing in both overtimes. They were fighting for the final playoff spot in the conference and fell 1.5 gamed behind the Chicago Bulls, who were idle.
Charlotte made a franchise-low five free throws and tied a franchise low with seven attempts. They began a stretch of six of its final eight regular-season games on the road and couldn’t pull past Allen and the Celtics for that last imperative playoff spot. Allen has been right on the money when it comes to free throws, making 131 of 133 before missing one in Wednesday’s contest.
