Dalsey, Hillblom, and Lynn Express

Did you know that DHL Express gets the otherwise arbitrary letters of its company from the last names of its original founders? Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom, and Robert Lynn formed DHL in 1969 as a courier service between the continental United States and Hawaii. After normal business expansion the company started shipping all across the U.S.

As a publicly traded company DHL received attention from German-based company Deutsche Post starting in 1998. Deutsche Post bought shares in the company from 1998 until 2001 when they achieved majority ownership of the company, and then completed their purchase of the company in 2002. Since the integration into Deutsche Post, the DHL brand has been used as a part of the Deutsche Post Express division. DHL now works almost exclusively in providing express logistic solutions wherever the company needs them across the globe.

DHL Express headquarters remain with Deutsche Post headquarters in Bonn, Germany. However, being a global company, there are separate headquarters located in major regions of the world: Headquarters for the Americas in Plantation, Florida; Asia Pacific headquarters located in Singapore, and the EEMEA headquarters located in Bahrain. The company is reputed for its ability to deliver post items worldwide. Part of the reputation comes for being able to go into Iraq and Afghanistan where U.S. and coalition troops have been involved in military campaigns.

In fact, a DHL plane was nearly destroyed by a surface to air missile fired by insurgents in late November, 2003, but the crew was able to safely land the plane despite the damage. Other foreign destinations include Cuba and North Korea to which countries U.S. based competitors cannot go due to trade embargoes imposed by the United States government.

Some of DHL’s fiercest competitors in the U.S. include UPS, FedEx and the United States Postal Service. Like their competitors, DHL offers contract services to small companies which act as a one stop shopping venue for packing and shipping options. Companies attempt to provide discount shipping by calculating the least expensive price between all the major shipping companies.

These companies promote further expansion of the DHL brand in offering the option to ship by DHL. DHL also benefits from a small partnership with the United States Postal Service that allows DHL to use the USPS network in order to deliver small packages. Also, DHL acts as the sole courier for USPS mail in and out of Iraq and Afghanistan where packages are x-rayed on site to screen them and prevent disaster.

InXpressUSA.com offers discount shipping through couriers like DHL and even opportunities for a discount shipping franchise. Art Gib is a freelance writer.
