Features of a Sniper Rifle Scope

Two of the most important factors to consider when buying a sniper rifle scope are the scope’s image quality and its level of magnification. Regardless of what you are hunting or shooting there is a scope that will meet your specifications - you just have to know what they are before you begin shopping.

A riflescope’s magnification or power is most simply explained as the distance the scope allows you to see clearly and shoot accurately. The longest distance isn’t necessarily the best. If you plan on shooting nearby targets, a long range sniper rifle scope will not be a good choice for a number of reasons. For one thing, many high powered or long range riflescopes do not allow for quick target acquisition. Also, the scope may not have a good enough field of view to allow you to keep one eye on the target while pulling your rifle to bear on an accurate shot.

The levels of magnification are low power, medium power and high power.

Low power sniper rifle scopes have magnification ranges such as 1.5-6×32, 2-7×32 and so on. These gun scopes are good for targets that are moving or at close range. These scopes provide a wide field of view and a bright sight picture even in low light.

Medium power sniper rifle scopes have ranges like 3-9×40, 2.5-10×50. These scopes are perfect for hunting large game or other targets that present themselves at a medium range. They still provide a good field of view and enhance image quality.

High power sniper rifle scopes have magnification ranges such as 6-18×40, 6-24×40. These riflescopes are the best available for long distance target shooting and sniping, especially when the target remains fairly motionless.

The image quality of a sniper rifle scope is dependent on the amount of light that the riflescope’s lenses deliver to the eye of the sniper. High levels of light transmission create sharper resolutions and show targets much more clearly.

But beyond lens quality, the things to look for in the optics of a rifle scope include the optical coatings that the scope manufacturer uses, the objective lens size, the scope’s resolution, its available field-of-view and eye relief, which are determined by the distance between your eye and the scope’s lens.

Different scopes also offer different types of targeting reticles. A reticle is simply the crosshair or pattern that is placed in the eyepiece of the scope and displays the gun-s position on the target. Some reticles can actually diminish image quality if they are not appropriate to your sniper shooting needs.

Before you buy your next sniper rifle scope think about what your range and you needs are. Bigger is not always better and low power can sometimes provide the clearest and most accurate shot.
