Google are one of the largest companies in the world, the business started by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were students at Stanford University. Google basically began in 1996 as a basic research project, the two founders came up with the idea that if a search engine analysed the relationship between websites then they would be able to offer a much better set of results to the end user. The site then became an overnight success and received numerous rounds of funding and investment.
If we fast forward a decade Google is now one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world and although search is still a major part of the company, Google have expanded into so many other sectors. They have also invested in many startup companies. The information below is taken from Wiki.
Since 2001, Google has acquired several small start-up companies.
In 2004, Google acquired a company called Keyhole, Inc., which developed a product called Earth Viewer which was renamed in 2005 to Google Earth.
In February 2006, software company Adaptive Path sold Measure Map, a weblog statistics application, to Google. Registration to the service has since been temporarily disabled. The last update regarding the future of Measure Map was made on 6 April 2006 and outlined many of the known issues of the service.
In late 2006, Google bought the online video site YouTube for US$1.65 billion in stock. Shortly after, on 31 October 2006, Google announced that it had also acquired JotSpot, a developer of wiki technology for collaborative Web sites.
On 13 April 2007, Google reached an agreement to acquire DoubleClick. Google agreed to buy the company for US$3.1 billion.
On 2 July 2007, Google purchased GrandCentral. Google agreed to buy the company for US$50 million.
On 9 July 2007, Google announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire enterprise messaging security and compliance company Postini.
As you can see Google have now got their foot in many doors, but have also created their own services, one of the most notable being Gmail. Gmail has expanded to be one of the most used email service on the internet. But Gmail has been in Beta for almost 5 years. But that all changed on the 8th July 2009 as Google announced that they would be taking Gmail and most of their Apps out of Beta mode as they now feel that the system is stable enough. Personally I believe they may be doing this to pave way for their new operating system.
