Johannesburg - A Feast for the Eyes, Ears, and Mind

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, the provincial capital of Gauteng, and is one of the forty largest metropolitan areas in the world, one of two African ‘global cities’. Those considering a holiday in Johannesburg are preparing themselves for a feast for the eyes, ears, and mind.

In Johannesburg, tourists cab expect exquisite wining and dining, championship golf courses, and a bustling and vibrant city centre set in beautiful natural surroundings. Jozi, Jo’burg and Egoli to those familiar with its eloquence, it is a melting pot of culture creating a thousand unique attractions for tourists.

It has been the source of a large gold and diamond trade, thanks to its mineral-rich location. O.R Tambo International Airport serves Johannesburg, the largest and busiest airport in Africa and a gateway for international travel.

The area which Johannesburg stands on was once just grassland, but is now one of the biggest man-made forests in the world. The Walter Sulu National Botanical Garden in Kloofendal conserves some of the original grassland but has encouraged over 120 different bird species into the area, including a pair of nesting black eagles. Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia is well-known for its Rose Garden and waterfowl.

The Braamfontein Spruit is the longest parkland in South Africa, running through the northern suburbs from the Westdene Dam. Walking trails along the river and its adjoining areas is popular with tourists, perhaps to Melville Koppies where an Iron Age village with smelting works can be found.

Johannesburg was founded in 1886 when gold was discovered by Australian prospector George Harrison, and has had a turbulent history. For those interested in the history, Newtown, Consitution Hill and Soweto are probably the best places to visit. Mary Fitzgerald Square is also well-worth a visit as it includes Museum Africa, the Bensusan Museum of Photography and the Market Theatre in the restored Fresh Produce Market Bulding, and the Workers Museum in the refurbished Electricity Department Compound as well as art galleries, craft shops, cafes and restaurants.

For those who are interested in sampling contemporary African music, head to Bassline in Newtown or check out the funky jazz venues in Soweto. There is a thriving local music scene to suit all musical palettes. Johannesburg is the wealthiest and best-entertained city in South Africa’s Gauteng province and the perfect place for those who want to take a vibrant, exciting holiday in Africa.
