Michael Jackson’s Bad: Track By Track
Michael Jackson’s 1987 album Bad is too often overlooked just because it wasn’t as groundbreaking or quite as successful as his 1982 album Thriller. But Bad did have five #1 US singles (Thriller had just two.) Here’s a track by track look at this great underrated MJ album.
1. Bad - This song has never been among my favorite Michael Jackson singles but it does have some nice moments. I particularly like the organ solo. An interesting little tidbit: Apparently MJ wanted to work with Prince on this song but Prince declined the offer.
2. The Way You Make Me Feel - This is a classic MJ song and among my favorites on the album. It’s one of those tracks where’s hard to resist the urge to dance as soon as you hear the beat.
3. Speed Demon - Not one of Jackson’s better songs but I do enjoy the sound effects.
4. Liberian Girl - I always thought this was a weird song. I also used to always think it was about a librarian rather than a Liberian.
5. Just Good Friend - This is an enjoyable if unremarkable duet with Stevie Wonder. It’s one of only two songs on the album not written by Jackson himself, the other is “Man in the Mirror.” In his previous album, Thriller, Jackson had a duet with Paul McCartney. Wonder & McCartney also had their own duet “Ebony & Ivory.”
6. Another Part of Me - Not one of the albums more memorable songs. In fact, I can’t think of much of anything to say about it. It did reach #11 on the US singles charts.
7. Man in the Mirror - One of Jackson’s signature songs. In the week following his death, it went to #2 on the UK singles charts more than 20 years after it was originally released. It was written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard (who later produced Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill.)
8. I Just Can’t Stop Loving You - This was a duet with Siedah Garrett. Although it went to #1 in both the US & the UK I don’t think it’s a particularly memorable song.
9. Dirty Diana - This was MJ’s “rock” song on this album (following up “Beat It” on Thriller.) And there’s some pretty cool crazy guitar sounds that come in at the end. I’ve always thought this was one of the most interesting songs on Bad.
10. Smooth Criminal - A classic track that has grown in stature over the years. It wasn’t one of the albums #1 singles (in the US or the UK anyway) but I think it’s more remembered than many of the songs that did better than it on the charts.
11. Leave Me Alone - This song was only included on the CD version of the album (at the time CDs were still pretty new to the game and most people bought their albums on vinyl.)
