MLB Tickets - Hard Times, Soft Prices, Full Stadiums
Filed Under Baseball
Former MLB team owner and promoter Bill Veek once said, “The most beautiful thing in the world is a ballpark filled with people.” But in these hard economic times, it is increasingly difficult for Major League Baseball teams to sell MLB tickets to all the exciting games. In year’s past it might have been easy to up ticket prices little by little, knowing that Joe Sixpack was still able to afford to come out to the stadium a few times a year. However, as retail sales have plunged and jobs have become scarcer during this time of economic downturn, sports leagues that use to rely on expendable income have to come up with better incentives for fans to come out to the ballpark. And what better way to take fans out to the ballgame than by drastically reducing ticket prices and offering excellent deals on stadium concessions?
Major League Baseball is reacting to the current economic situation with some forward-thinking initiatives. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig has instituted several new promotions. One of which, the Fan Value Corner, will help fans seek out the best deals in the league. Most teams are offering seats under $10, and in some cases under $5. The new lower prices, combined with the influence of secondary ticket marketplaces like StubHub, will create a vast resource for fans who want bargain seats. Meal deals are even better. For instance, at some ballparks you can get tickets to seats that are “all-you-can-eat.” According to Mark Newman at MLB.com, Bud Selig had this to say:
“Throughout its long and distinguished history, baseball has always served as a diversion for its fans in difficult times. These difficult times are no different, and Major League Baseball is stepping up its efforts to make the game more affordable and to demonstrate to its fans how important they are to us.
“Through a variety of ballpark promotions, fans will be able to stretch their entertainment dollar for an experience at the ballpark, as we will offer great value and the most affordable ticket of any major professional sport. Also, we will increase our already substantial community activities and continue to contribute valuable resources to important social causes during these difficult times.”
Just to give you an example of the amazing deals that teams are offering, here’s what you can find at the Fan Value Corner.
-The Arizona Diamondbacks are selling a season ticket package that comes out to $5.12 per ticket.
-The Baltimore Orioles have Birthday deals- where you can enter the park for free on your birthday- as well as $6 ticket student discounts.
-On certain days in certain areas, the Colorado Rockies are offering tickets that will give you $10 worth of concession items free. It’s basically a free ten dollars.
-The Oakland A’s have so many deals it’s hard to pick the best one. Some nights there will be $2 tickets, some nights there are $1 hot dogs, some stadium sections offer all-you-can-eat seats, and on Fridays you can get a Family pack, good for 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas and 4 peanuts for $50.
-At Texas Rangers Tuesday home games, kids 13 and under can enter the park for free.
