Steve Nash led with 25 points, Grant Hill had 23 points, Shaquille O’Neal scored 22, Jason Richardson registered 18, and the Phoenix Suns defeated the Houston Rockets 114-109 on Wednesday night. The Suns led by as many as 13 in the first half and were up 67-56 at the break. Ron Artest was on a roll, scoring 10 in a 15-3 surge that gave the Rockets a 77-73 lead on his 19 footer with 6:20 left in the third quarter. Houston was sharp early in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Suns 8-1 and would eventually go up 96-91 on back-to-back jump shots made by Von Wafer. But Phoenix would bounce back with an unbelievable 15-0 run. They also had a secret weapon called Steve Nash, who’s two free throws; put his team up 104-96 with only 4:17 remaining in the game. Nash wasn’t just sinking buckets, his assists set up Jared Dudley and Matt Barnes 3s during their scoring burst. Nash would finish with 17 assists and only had one turnover in the game. Artest answered with his own 3 to cut the lead to 106-101, But this was Nash’s night and he sank a 3 from downtown to make the score 109-101.
O’Neal and Barnes could have extended the lead for the Suns with their free throws, but both missed a pair and Huston seemed like they wouldn’t go away easily. Wafer took advantage of the missed shots and headed down court to make a routine layup. The game got very interesting; the score was 111-109 with only 21 seconds left of the game. But Barnes made two free throws to seal the game. Although Phoenix shot 80 percent in the first quarter, Houston did an excellent job of remaining compose and staying in the game. At that point it wasn’t a blowout. The Suns only led 33-30. The Rockets had their own chances and took a 41-39 lead on consecutive 3s by Wafer and Brent Barry with 8:40 left of the half.
However, Houston’s defense couldn’t contain the Phoenix’s offensive powerhouse. They exploded with a 16-4 run to go ahead 55-45 on Richardson’s 3-pointer with 3:37 remaining. Nash was all over the court in this contest, he even had a little fun when he found Hill wide open and gave him a sweet pass for a quick slam dunk. This gave the Suns the biggest lead in the half, 67-54. Although Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak, they are still four games behind the Dallas Mavericks for that last playoff spot in the West. The Suns will face-off with the Mavericks on Sunday. But what was impressive against the Rockets was how the Suns outrebounded the team 26-11 in the first half. The good news for the desert team is that Leandro Barbosa could be back in the lineup Friday night against Sacramento. The athlete missed seven games due to a strained knee.
