Kevin Durant scored 31 points, Russell Westbrook had 16 points, Nenad Krstic and Jeff Green registered 16 points each, and the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the San Antonio Spurs 96-95 on Tuesday night. Although the Thunder are tied for the fifth-fewest wins in the NBA, There were able to pull off another upset against the Spurs. The Spurs lost to the Thunder in Oklahoma City on March 16, when it came down to a last drive and they missed the basket. Time had expired and the same fate occurred on Tuesday night, just with a different Spur missing the basket. This time it was Michael Finley’s jumper that deflected off the rim. The game started out great for San Antonio and they led by as much as eight in the first quarter before the more youthful Thunder came back to take the lead. Kyle Weaver’s 3-pointer with 7:12 left in the second gave the Thunder their first lead since the opening minutes. From there the game turned into a seesaw battle. Oklahoma City went on a 10-3 run and held the Spurs without a field goal for more than five minutes to take a 51-40 lead. The Thunder’s lead had been as much as 17 points in the third after Durant nailed his jump shot. But their lead vanished and the Spurs rallied back. Duncan answered with a layup on the other end to start a 9-2 run to end the quarter.

This was Oklahoma City’s first win in six games and it was an unlikely road victory against a playoff-bound team. With only eight games remaining in the season, San Antonio lost their lead in the Southwest Division and fell into a first-place tie with Huston. And Denver is not too far behind. They took a half-game lead as the number 2 team in the West with a win Tuesday over New York. San Antonio’s remaining schedule doesn’t get any easier as they have to play five of its final eight games on the road. There will be a rematch against the Thunder in Oklahoma City next week. Although the Spurs have lost two straight games, they are only two victories away from their 10th consecutive 50-win season, a feat accomplished only by Boston (1958-1969) and the Los Angeles Lakers (1979-1991).

Shaun Livingston sat on the bench in street clothes for Oklahoma City. He signed a multiyear contract on Tuesday after spending three weeks with their NBA Development team. Livingston was the number fourth pick out of high school in the 2004 draft and is trying to comeback from a devastating knee injury with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2007. Livingston will be unable to play this week, but will practice with his team for the first time on Thursday. He will most likely be in uniform next week, just in time to test his knee against the Spurs. San Antonio’s forward Fabricio Oberto also looks to return for next week’s match-up against the Thunder. He has been sidelined for the past two games because of an Irregular heartbeat.
