Time Management Tips - 3 Strategies For Building Successful New Habits Guaranteed to Find You Time

Finding time is all about making successful choices. So why not start by focusing on all the areas where you do successfully find time? This helps you identify what strengths you possess, and how you put those strengths to work for you.

Strategy #1: List each of your successes.

Start by filling out the following sentences. Identify as many endings for each sentence as possible.

“I know I will find time to __________________.”

“People can count on me to ___________________.”

“I feel good about always making time to ___________________, whether I’m in the mood or not.”

Strategy #2: Catalog all of your strengths.

Review your completed sentences and identify what contributes to your successes. Your priorities, your skills, and your values will help you build your effectiveness.

* Which strengths contribute to your finding time for certain tasks or activities?

* Which come naturally? Your combined aptitudes are unique to you. Use these innate energies to fuel your new success habits.

* Which did you develop, and how? Your acquired strengths prove your capacity to transform problems into opportunities. Take full credit for these.

* How do your strengths reflect what you value? Deepen your commitment to these values by building more success habits.

Strategy #3: Build one new “positive habit” into your life.

Envision a typical day. Note the sticking points where things break down. List 3 positive habits that you could incorporate to smooth out your day.

Select one of those positive habits that would draw on your current strengths.

* Make it simple and small enough to be realistic. (For example, walk and stretch for 15 minutes before work.)

* Clearly identify how this will enhance your life. (Walking and stretching for 15 minutes before work would generate more energy, and reduce stress.)

* Identify which “time pocket” your new activity goes into, and what you need to remove from that time pocket first. (Like skipping the morning news on TV.)

* List anything you need to do to ensure your success. (Plan breakfast the night before, and unplug the television.)

* Collect any needed supplies. (Walking shoes, MP3 player, etc.)

* Enter this into your calendar. If you need uninterrupted time, let people know ahead of time.

Encourage yourself as warmly as you would a young child. This all-important step reinforces positive behavior, and also supports your becoming more self-referenced. This sets in motion a positive cycle, since self-reference is a cornerstone of successful discipline and self-esteem.

As you develop the success habit, you will find yourself welcoming new challenges to find more time. What is your next step to grow your success habit to find quality time?
