USC Basketball Tickets - Trojans Win First Pac-10 Tournament Championship

Freshman DeMar DeRozan registered 25 points, Daniel Hackett scored 19, Dwight Lewis added 13, and the Trojans defeated Arizona State 66-63 on Saturday. The sixth-seeded Trojans (21-12) became the lowest seed to win the Pac-10 Championship. USC had been 0-3 in league tourney finals, losing to Organ in 2003 and 2007 and to Arizona in 2002. The previous lowest-seed to win was Organ six years ago. During the regular season, ASU and USC had split their games. USC fans were chanting “One More Year!” to DeRozan, who may be headed to the NBA draft. He was named the most outstanding player in the Pac-10 tournament. Lewis hit a shot from way downtown in front of USC’s bench that left the Trojans trailing 63-62. There was only 1:01 remaining. Arizona’s James Harden was called for an offensive foul and turnover at ASU’s end. Soon after, Derek Glasser fouled Hackett to put him at the line with only 42 ticks left on the game clock. Hackett would make no mistakes at the foul line, swooshing both buckets to give the Trojans a 64-63 lead. It was the first lead for the red and gold since the game’s opening minutes and the team had to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit to pull off the victory.

Harden, the Pac-10 player of the year missed some crucial plays that could have won the game for the Sun Devils. He missed a layup with 19 seconds left of the game and a 3-pointer over Taj Gibson with four seconds left. Harden did not play well, only registering 10 points, which was well under his 21.1 average. Give credit to Gibson, who was all over Harden like a cheap suit in the final 19 seconds. Fans found out why he had been voted the league’s defensive player of the year. Gibson blocked Harden’s layup attempt and got the defensive rebound while being fouled by Glasser. Gibson made one of these free throws for a 65-63 lead. And when Harden went up for that 3-point attempt, Gibson made him alter his shot, making the man miss the bucket.

The final point of the game came when Lewis was fouled. He missed the first and made the second to give his team a comfortable 66-63 lead. ASU had to make a desperate 3 to tie the game. Glasser had one final chance and released a shot from downtown from the far left sideline, but was off the mark at the buzzer. Coming off a 65-55 semifinal upset of No. 15 UCLA, USC had the confidence and momentum not only to defeat the Sun Devils this past weekend, but also to control their own destiny in the NCAA tournament. The victory against ASU gives the Trojans the Pac-10 Championship title, but most importantly they’re guaranteed to receive their third invitation to the big dance, the grand daddy of all prizes in college basketball, a trip to the NCAA tournament. March madness just got a little more interesting. A year ago, University of Southern California was eliminated in the first round to Kansas State.
