WWE Tickets - Where Are They Now: Virgil’s Story
Filed Under Sports
Mike Jones (aka Virgil) had an infectious smile that could warm up any heart. But don’t let that fool you because this tough guy knows his way around the ring. From his time wrestling with Jerry Lawler in Memphis, to his memorable moments at WrestleMania, Virgil has seen it all in the WWE. Years after leaving the sport, fans still remember Jones as a tough competitor who had an inspirational and accomplished career, though the wrestler was not always a fan favorite. When he made his appearance in the WWE, he positioned himself as the assistant extraordinary to the evil “Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase, making WWE tickets a popular treat for both Million Dollar Man fans and those who disliked him.
Jones recalled that the two were as close as brothers. Both men knew how to draw on the emotions of the crowds wherever they traveled. Praising Dibiase when he said his quality as a wrestler was matched only by his quality as a man, the former star added that the two never fought in all the years they knew each other - they were gentlemen, professionals, and friends.
Most fans don’t know that Jones received his degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia before entering into the WWE. So what has Jones been up to since leaving the WWE? He put his degree to use by teaching mathematics several days a week at a Catholic high school in his home town of Pittsburgh, P.A. The man formally known as Virgil is now addressed by students as Mr. Jones.
The former wrestler looks to pass on some vital knowledge he picked up from years on the road to his students. The lesson on the road included respect, which is exactly what this math powerhouse has embedded into the minds of his students. The teacher describes the WWE as a first- class organization where a human being can learn to be a first-class individual and that an individual learns how to control himself in different situations, how to act, how to bite your tongue, and the value of “turning your cheek.”
When Mr. Jones isn’t head of the class, he makes his occasional appearances in the ring. In 2006, Virgil made a comeback when he toured with Armed Forces Entertainment. As part of the project, he wrestled for troops in Guam, Tokyo, Korea, and Honolulu, Hawaii. Virgil’s venture brought back plenty of memorable matches from the early 1990’s. One of those matches was his triumph against his best friend, Ted Dibiase, in SummerSlam ‘91 at Madison Square Garden.
The emotional wrestler said standing on the turnbuckle at the Garden was his fondest memory. He got to hold up that Million Dollar Belt while 20,000 people chanted his name. The former WWE star wishes his fans the best in their health and in their future. He sincerely thanks the people who supported him throughout his career and appreciates the encouragement he has overwhelmingly received over the years to make many more appearances in the ring.
